USS Arizona Hull Fragment

November 11th, 2011

Here is a box I built for the local Naval Operational Support Center in Tucson Arizona.  They have on loan from the Naval Historiacal Command an actual fragment of the hull from the USS Arizona.  The first image shows the front view without the fragment.  The second image shows it in place with the fragment inside.

Part Two

Part Two

Here is the other half of the “Flown Flag” order.  I masked the image the same way I had to in the first display.  Then of course used the same background and dyed the frame a very dark Red Mahogany color.  Finding displays that display a picture in such a way are difficult to find.  The two items will hang together on the wall and look better now that they match.

Flown Flag

Flown Flag

Here is a box a customer wanted made to look more like a shadow box.  Not that the box he had was all that bad, he just had somethng else in mind.  Because the previous box cut down the certificate and glued things together it was quite challenging.  I had to mask the certificate carefully.  To make it even more difficult the customer wanted to use the existing outside frame and build another frame to match.

AF Symbol Box in Blue

AF Symbol Box in Blue

Here is the Air Force symbol box with all the items placed in it.  The customer retired Friday and was extremely please with the result of his shadow box.  I have been unable to capture the beauty of the blue in a photograph.  The back is a Royal Blue felt and the finish is a blue dye for the symbol and Golden Oak on the rest of the box.  The blue dye still shows the wood grain and just looks incredible in person.

Cherry Old Air Force Master Sergeant Outline

Cherry Old Air Force Master Sergeant Outline

Here is a box that was a big project.  The top and the bottom are bent using stips of wood and bound together.  Then they were laminated with cherry vaneer.  The sides and face are solid cherry.  This was a dedication a customer had built in memory of his father.  His father wore the Master Sergeant stripes in the Air Force prior to the new design with one stripe on top.  The most difficult part was the glass.  In order to cut glass in an inverted way, it must be tempered and then cut with a water jet.
